Phono theme & lineup
The phonology bit of the EGG is thematic this year, around Substance-Free Phonology: what is it, how does it work, what are its consequences (e.g. regarding naturality, markedness, arbitrariness), what kind of things are present at birth, what are the different versions of SFP, by which properties are they different?
The following teachers will address these issues:
- Silke Hamann (U Amsterdam) – one class in week 2
- Alex Chabot (Maryland) – two classes, week 1+2
- Veno Volenec (Concordia) – two classes, week 1+2
- Pavel Iosad (Edinburgh) – one class, week 1
- Ollie Sayeed (Pennsylvania) – one class, week 1
P. Iosad’s class will be online (Pavel can’t make it to Brno), all others in person.
Stay tuned for class titles and abstracts…
EGG 2022 in person and in Brno
The EGG 2022 will be in person and in the lovely Moravian city of Brno (Czech Republic), from Monday July 25th to Friday August 5th.
Teachers and classes will drop in here… stay tuned.
Closing party with cocktail contest
We will have a closing party in Gathertown tonight (Thursday) from 19:00.
The cocktail contest is a classic EGG event, for which you come up with a linguistic-related name for your cocktail (some inspiration “Strong uninterpretable seizures”, “Syntax on the Beach”) and prepare it for others to taste. We would then vote for the best cocktail in different categories (the traditional ones are: tastiest, best name, deadliest). This year, it will be all about cocktail names. Prepare yourself one and come enjoy it with others!

Open podium and events in Gather
Hi eggers, the Open podium student presentations will happen on Tuesday and Wednesday from 18:00, take a look at the schedule. Right after at 19:00, there will be another party in Gather on Tuesday and an EGG themed Quiz on Wednesday. See you there!
Vera Hohaus & Wataru Uegaki – Introduction to semantics
This unit is an introduction to formal semantics. We will introduce some conceptual and formal foundations and then go on to build a basic model of meaning composition, using situations. Some of the phenomena discussed in the unit include the interpretation of determiners, negative polarity items as well as modification and ambiguity. No background required, but feel free to get in touch if you wonder if this course is suitable for you.
Party in Gather(town)
We will have an Opening party tomorrow, on Thursday at 18:30 CEST. Come meet people, talk, have a drink and discussions. Don’t forget to byob!
Open podium call
Dear EGGers, as announced, we will have an Open podium where you can present some of your work (work in progress or a finished paper), discuss it with your peers, ask for suggestions in the form of Lightning talks (5 min talk + 5 min questions/feedback). It will all be very informal and time permitting we’ll in principle include everybody (on a first-come-first-served basis).
If you want to present, send an email with subject line Open podium including a title of your talk, your name, affiliation and a short abstract to wiebke.petersen@uni-bielefeld.de. Deadline is Friday midnight, and a schedule will be announced by Monday. Presentations are to take place in week 2 on Tuesday and/or Wednesday after classes.
