This course provides a compact introduction to the theory of distinctive features in phonology. It will cover the following topics:
- Motivating features as the smallest units of phonological representation
- The different functions of features
- Standard feature theory and a standard set of features
- Using features in rule-based and constraint-based phonology
Feature underspecification - Feature organisation (Autosegmental Phonology and Feature Geometry)
At the end of this course, you should have a reasonably good idea of the main concepts and developments in distinctive feature theory.
