Christian Uffmann – Distinctive Feature Theory

This course provides a compact introduction to the theory of distinctive features in phonology. It will cover the following topics:

  • Motivating features as the smallest units of phonological representation
  • The different functions of features
  • Standard feature theory and a standard set of features
  • Using features in rule-based and constraint-based phonology
    Feature underspecification
  • Feature organisation (Autosegmental Phonology and Feature Geometry)

At the end of this course, you should have a reasonably good idea of the main concepts and developments in distinctive feature theory.
