The course provides an introduction to a substance-free model of phonological knowledge called Logical Phonology. The main tenet of that approach is that phonological knowledge can be described and partly explained using simple operations characteristic of logical set-theory, such as set unification, intersection and subtraction. Logical Phonology will be applied to data from a variety of languages to illustrate the main principles of this approach, its analytical methods, and its limitations.
